Facilitated Discussion: Turnover in Child Care
Camp Fire Resource Center- North Fort Worth
Studies have found over half of child care center teaching staff and a third of directors only work at a child care center for 4 years. Among those who leave, only half continued to work in field of child care. Highly trained teaching staff were more likely to leave their jobs if they earned lower wages, worked in a climate with less stability of highly trained co-workers, and worked with a greater percentage of teaching staff who didn’t have a bachelor's degree. Directors were more likely to leave if they earned lower wages. Since this study, turnover in early childhood education has not improved. Let’s discuss how the impact on children, families and quality of care using the jigsaw method.
