COREY FITZGERALD
Summer Writing Assistant

There was a bright gleam in her eye when Quinn explained all the different activities she loves to do at Camp Fire Summer Day Camp in Parker County. “I create my own board games,” she exclaimed proudly, pointing to the overflowing arts and crafts table. Sometimes she will create entirely new games, while other times, she’ll create variations of current games, like when she transformed Candy Land into “Friendship Land.”

Quinn is one of many students attending day camp in Aledo this summer. She enjoys snakes, the color green, and appreciates the warmth of the south after moving from the Pacific Northwest. Quinn just finished the 2nd grade and is involved with school – especially math and science. She even has aspirations of being a world-famous scientist one day!

After the restrictions of last summer, it’s easy for kids to feel trapped. Quinn says that going to summer camp helps make things feel “more normal” again, and she was elated with the prospect of being able to go out and form new friendships.

With a vast array of markers, pencils, construction paper, glue, and friends to enjoy them with, there is no shortage of fun to be had. She also enjoys meeting new friends at camp and the time they are given in the gym, which she uses to practice her gymnastics. After working hard at her crafts, Quinn enjoys sitting back and relaxing with cinnamon applesauce and lots of goldfish.

The summer of 2021 is Quinn’s second year attending Camp Fire Day Camp. She says her parents give her the option of coming or not, but she always does for the “friends and fun.” She has a friend going to Camp El Tesoro this summer, and Quinn is considering going there next summer herself. But whether she decides to attend El Tesoro or stay at day camp, it’s evident she has many more years left as a happy camper.
