Randy Keeley was no stranger to the name ‘El Tesoro’ – his sister was a camper and is now in the counselor in training program, and his two brothers (one older, one younger) are both campers. In fact, Randy’s whole family has loved El Tesoro. But when Randy’s mom told him he was going to camp, admittedly in hopes that he would become more social, he was pretty nervous about the experience.

Now, starting his second year of camp, Randy is a confident archer who shot a perfect score half-way through his week at camp – and he’s more than proud.

Archery is just one of Randy’s favorite activities at camp. His first year he selected equestrian and challenge course as his second and third activities, and he loved them so much, he selected all three again his second year at camp. While he’s recognized his skill in archery, it’s horseback he really enjoys the most. His favorite memory at camp is the trail ride he did last year at the end of the week.

His first year of camp was full of new experiences and friends. Randy never felt like making friends at camp was hard, and he was happy to see some from last year in his cabin again (along with his counselor, Nick).

“I think every kid should try camp at least once,” Randy said. “Most people would love it. But if you don’t love it, that’s ok too. It’s definitely worth trying.”

For the kids who are worried about leaving their phones and video games, Randy is happy to get a break for a week.

“Technology is a big part of life these days, and honestly sometimes it makes things so complicated – even for kids. Camp makes me take a break from that, and I really like it.”

As for next year, Randy hopes to come back for two weeks. Even if he doesn’t, he’ll get his walking staff – and that’s something he can’t wait to experience.
